Hi everyone

Sorry as i might have posted this in the wrong area, not sure.

Have any of you had to purchase travel insurance? I do get cover through work, but when i advised them about RA they said i would need to pay additional £70 for this to be covered. Im really not sure what to do because we are only going away for week to Spain, but you never know do you.

So I just wondered what you all do & what companies you have used?

I know £70 isn't alot to pay really but because we have booked a last minute holiday as we weren't planning to go away this year due to good old money, but because I've been very down recently about RA and basically cried a lot in my last appointment, my Hubby just said right sod it we will find the money we need to get away Smile

Love to hear from you

Lou xx

I have just paid out £200 insurance with Saga for 10 days in Canada!
It does cost more than Europe to start with, but my RA was fine, just a small supplement, it's my husband's type 2 diabetes that pushes the price up! It was the same on every site....mention the diabetes and up go the premiums!
I'm sure you'll be able to find insurance that doesn't charge as much as £70 extra for the RA.
Good luck with it, hope you enjoy your holiday.

Doreen xx

PS I've just remembered I read on the HU site that NRAS has a list of "RA friendly" insurers ,so give the helpline a ring.

I use Saga too as found this the best deal for me as a 50+ person with RA - some of the others were cheaper to buy but didn't give the same level of cover. Do check out things like the cover for bringing you AND your husband if there's a problem. Mine was £70 all in - but it's for a full year's worth of travel. Saga also emailed me the documents for no extra charge. Polly

I bank through Lloyds Bank , a gold member. Travel insurance is included and I have rang about
my RA and I have had it confirmed that it is covered. Stipulation is that you cant have been in
hospital as in patient I think for the previous 6 months.

Need to always anwer honestly otherwise it is money down the drain as when you come to make a claim
there will be no cover.

As Doreen suggests it is worth checking with the NRAS helpline as they do hold a list of travel insurers.

Be careful to check the small print as not all companies provide the same level of cover and some seem to elevate the price because we are on regular hospital monitoring. I had to call an emergency doctor whilst abroad last year so do make sure these type of eventualities are covered. For peace of mind it simply isn't worth skimping on insurance.

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

We too bank with lloyds bank. I phoned earlier in the year to check if I would be covered and they said because I had notified them I would be covered for no extra charge.

I just got my travel insurance online with columbus direct. You just need to list RA as a pre-existing medical condition and answer a few short questions about your RA in an online questionnaire. I only had to pay £10 for my insurance for a weeks cover in Europe.

as we have to be part of the european community might as well get one of these cards and take advantage of "low cost and sometimes free treatment when temporarily abroad in member states" but as it is not clear which countries provide what and what low cost actually means, is probably not a good idea to go without insurance altogether - probably have to do more reading about it to get the facts straight.
sorry you'll have to cut and paste because I don't know how to do direct link and all the clever people in my house arent here at the moment ...

Probably too late by now, but we have a Halifax family annual Europe policy which is £134 a year. It cost £10 extra to put my RA on, £10 extra for my daughter's RA and £40 extra for my hypothyroidism. @ of the kids have Asthma and so do I.

Hope that helps someone!!

We bank with the Co-op and also have free travel insurance. They wrote to confirm my RA was covered at no extra cost.

Hi Lou. We used Virgin insurance this year when we went to Majorca and i can't remember the cost but it was reasonable. We have used saga before and they were very good when we had to cancel a holiday, very quick and efficient and we got all the money back apart from the deposit.

Check your home and contents insurance. We have travel insurance included with ours (you still have to declare pre existing conditions) but only up to age 65. My husband is 65.
